UC San Diego percussion ensemble red fish blue fish will be performing pieces that consist of the ensemble’s recent sonic explorations, along with UC San Diego professor Ti McCormack’s Glost Fire. Having founded the ensemble after joining the Department of Music, red fish blue fish is one of Professor Steven Schick’s collaborations with UC San Diego graduate students. Over the course of its 30+ years, red fish blue fish has played regularly on campus as well as in highly profiled concerts on the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Green Umbrella series, at Lincoln Center and The Park Avenue Armory in New York, The Centre Pompidou in Paris, and elsewhere in Europe and Asia. Recently, as a teaching tool, they have developed exercises that they call “sonic explorations,” short prepared or improvised pieces that serve to explore the sonic potential of a single instrument—a five-minute essay on solo woodblock, or single gong, for example.
