What does it mean to speak for God when the world refuses to listen? breaking the veil is a series of installation and concert works that explore the voices of Medieval and Renaissance women mystics and visionaries—those who saw, heard, and felt the divine, often in defiance of a Church that sought to silence them. Works in a variety of experimental voices come together to trace the struggles and triumphs of  St. Hildegard of Bingen, St. Joan of Arc, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Clare of Assisi, and others within and against the patriarchal and doctrinal boundaries of their faith, revealing the power, ecstasy, and terror of the ancient divine feminine experience and asking what we can learn from it today.

This recital is a unique two-day presentation of original work by UC San Diego composers: day 1 (March 10) features a rotating installation of longform spatialized chant with audiovisual immersion; day 2 (March 11) presents a theatrical concert performance. Featuring works by Emily Barger, Daniel Cui, Ana Luisa Díaz De Cossío, Aaron Mencher, Akari Komura, William Kuo, and Carlos Rosas.
