MUS95F's Fall Concert, titled "Percussion is an Invitation", explores the expanding and welcoming nature of percussion music. Percussion is not defined by one instrument or culture, but rather by a growing dialogue, and the invitation to join and contribute is open. The program reflects this growing dialogue in a literal fashion: beginning with a duo using hands on the piano and body, followed by a trio for swirling and striking chopsticks on found objects, a quartet for homogenized mallets on tuned keyboards, a collection of septets employing an orchestra of instruments and tools, a piece for eleven performers utilizing electronic amplification and the human voice, and concluding with a brief piece featuring audience participation. As we leave the performance, this spirit of inclusion can be extended beyond campus into our various local communities.
